Vascular Surgery - Varicose Veins - Mandakini Foot Care
Varicose veins are enlarged, tortuous veins that typically appear on the feet, legs and sometimes thigh. They occur when the valves in the veins that help blood flow against gravity become weak or damaged, causing blood to pool and the veins to swell.
Risk factors for developing varicose veins include heredity, pregnancy, obesity, prolonged standing, and ageing. Symptoms may include pain, swelling of legs which initially increases by evening, itching, ankle and leg discolouration, night cramps, skin changes, presence of dilated veins and heaviness in the affected limb.
To prevent varicose veins, consider the following precautions:
1) Exercise regularly to improve blood circulation and maintain a healthy weight.
2) Avoid prolonged periods of standing or sitting, as both can contribute to pooling of blood in the legs. In case there is necessity of standing long hours, consider intermittently standing on your toes for 2 seconds every 15-20 min. This can help in contracting the calf muscles, which can pump the blood towards heart ( Hence it is also called second heart)
3) Elevate your legs occasionally, especially after long periods of sitting or standing, to help blood flow back to the heart.
4) Wear compression stockings, which apply gentle pressure to help prevent blood pooling and promote better circulation.
5) Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support overall vascular health.
6) Avoid wearing tight clothing around the waist, legs, as it can constrict blood flow.
7) Quit smoking, as it can weaken blood vessels and contribute to poor blood circulation.
Treatment for varicose veins include:
Lifestyle changes: Regular exercise, weight loss, and avoiding prolonged sitting or standing can help improve blood circulation and alleviate symptoms.
Compression stockings: Wearing graduated class 2 compression stockings can help reduce swelling, pain, and heaviness in the legs by applying gentle pressure to the affected areas.
Sclerotherapy: This minimally invasive procedure involves injecting a solution into the varicose veins, causing them to scar and collapse. Over time, the veins are reabsorbed into surrounding tissue, and blood is rerouted to healthier veins.
Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT): A laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein, and the laser energy seals the vein shut. Blood flow is redirected to other healthy veins.
Radio frequency ablation: Similar to EVLT, this treatment uses radio frequency energy to heat and seal the problematic vein, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins.
Surgery: In more severe cases or when other treatments are not effective, surgical removal of the varicose veins (vein stripping) may be recommended.
Treatment options range from conservative measures like compression stockings, elevating the legs, and exercise, to more invasive procedures like sclerotherapy, laser therapy, or surgery along with compression dressings
